Glacier Trips
The glacier trip begins with a scenic forty-
minute flightseeing trip
from Delta Junction along the north face of the Alaska Range to
a gravel airstrip at our glacier camp. The flight offers a close-up
view of several rugged peaks and glaciers.
Your glacier adventure will be based out of a
very comfortable heated tent camp on a kame terrace of Trident Glacier.
The alpine camp is at an altitude of 4,000 feet (1,219 m). Twenty mile long
Trident Glacier originates at the base of 13,800 foot (4,206 m) Mount Hayes
and winds down through the Alaska Range forking at the base of Mount Moffit, 13,000 feet
(3,962 m), which is only 3 miles (4.8 km) from our camp.
Plenty
of Wildlife - No People
The rugged beauty and massiveness of these two mountains compares
with McKinley. The abundance of wildlife (Dall sheep, grizzly bears,
caribou, wolves, wolverines, marmots, etc) also compares with
that of Denali National Park, but the uniqueness of our camp is that
there are no roads and you will see no other people.
Terrific Hiking Opportunities
The area offers several levels of hiking or climbing. For those
who don't want to go on long hikes, short hikes from camp offer magnificent
views of Mount Moffit and Trident Glacier and opportunities for
wildlife viewing.
For the more adventurous, a one-mile hike would
provide accessibility to Trident Glacier and actual hiking on the
glacier. At this point Mount Moffit rises 8,000 feet (2,438 m)
straight up from the glacier. Longer hikes or overnight spike camps take you up the
glacier and to the base of Mount Moffit. The mountains surrounding
our camp provide all levels of climbing opportunities from mild
slopes to several hundred foot rock faces. There are no established
man-made trails and our goal is to maintain Leave No Trace principles.
Three-day or five-day guided trips and unlimited
length drop-off flights are available to the glacier camp.
For the really adventurous who are organizing
their own trips: we can supply transportation for spring mountain
climbers and skiers to the Mt. Hayes and Mt. Moffit areas.
